FORM OF GOVERNMENT

council-manager

The Town of Wilkesboro is a Council-Manager Form of Government, which combines the leadership of elected officials, a Mayor and four Town Council Members, along with the professional experience of an appointed local government administrator - a Town Manager.

The council is the legislative body; its members are the community's decision makers, are responsible for setting policy, approving the budget, and determining the tax rate. The Mayor is recognized as the political head of the municipality but is a member of the legislative body and does not have the power to veto legislative actions.

The Town Manager serves at the pleasure of the council and is the council's chief advisor. The manager is responsible for directing day-to-day operations, administration, personnel, and preparing the budget.
